Ramona Kay Smith

March 27, 1949 - July 30, 2012

LAKELAND, Fla. — Ramona Kay (Vardiman) Smith, 63, Lakeland, Fla., died July 30, 2012, in Lakeland after an extended illness.

She was born March 27, 1949, in Alexandria, the daughter of Fred Vardiman and Wanita (Etsler) Vardiman, and was a former Alexandria resident.

Ramona was a graduate of Alexandria-Monroe High School-Class of 1967. She worked at the former Commercial Bank in Alexandria for 25 years. While living in Alexandria, Ramona was a member of the Alexandria Friends Church. She was a member of the Lake Gibson Church of the Nazarene in Lakeland.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Smith, whom she married July 10, 1971; daughter, Tammy Smith, at home; three aunts, Ann (Don) Glenn, Esther Miller and Dawn (Bob) Hunt; uncle, Jim (Bobbie) Etsler; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gifford Vardiman; two aunts, Dorothy Etsler and Gwen (Merland) Johnson; and two uncles, Philip Etsler and John Etsler.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, with the Rev. Don Glenn officiating. Interment will follow in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Ramona Smith Memorial Fund for the continuing care of their daughter Tammy.  The memorial fund can be contributed to through PayPal at or through the funeral home.

Services will take place at 10:30 a.m. today at the Lake Gibson Church of the Nazarene, Lakeland, Fla. Friends may call at the church after 9:30 am. Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home, Lakeland, Fla., is in charge of the Florida arrangements.
