Barbara J. Sokol

May 4, 1924 - Sept. 10, 2013

ANDERSON — Barbara J. Sokol, 89, of Anderson, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at Bethany Pointe Health Campus after a brief illness.

She was born May 4, 1924, the daughter of George William and Mayme Edna (Thompson) Terhorst in Terre Haute. She graduated from Anderson High School and lived most of her life in Anderson. She retired from Indiana Bell Telephone Co.

Barbara was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and volunteered at St. John’s Medical Center for many years.

She is survived by her children, Mary Ann (Butch) Meese of Westfield, David (Kitty) Sokol of Columbia, Tenn., Mark (Carmen) Sokol of Anderson, Carol (Ron) Buckner of Anderson, Jane (Duane) Sellers of Lafayette, John Sokol of Davenport, Fla., Steve (Susie) Sokol of Indianapolis, Tom Sokol of Anderson, Jim Sokol of Anderson and Chris (Patty) Sokol of Alexandria, La.; grandchildren, Audra Sokol, Matt (Stacey) Sokol, Brian Buckner, John (Sarah) Buckner, Kevin Buckner, Kelly Weist (fiance, Tom Stockton) Lori (Ben) Ovenden, Mike (Kelli) Sokol, Jeff (Elysa) Sokol, Adam Sokol, Mike Sokol and John Sokol; several step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren, Lily, Chris, Emmy, Logan, Hope, Ella, Lucy, Piper, Tyler, Madison and Emma.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael J. Sokol.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Mark Walter officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.

Visitation will be 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospice or St. Vincent de Paul Society.
