MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — Michael J. “Mike” Payton, 57, formerly of Alexandria, Ind. passed away Sept. 7, 2013, at the Baptist Medical Center-South, Jacksonville, Fla. after a brief illness.
Mike was born in Anderson, Ind. on Jan. 6, 1956, the son of Marion and Lena (York) Payton.
He graduated from Alexandria-Monroe High School Class of 1974 and received his Master’s degree from Purdue University. Mike worked as an electrical engineer at the Fleet Readiness Center SE for the United States Department of Defense. The results of Mike’s work directly supported the safety and welfare of the men and women of the United States Navy.
Mike was a former IHSAA umpire and referee. He was a master gardener, a Life Member of the Purdue Alumni Association, Society of Naval and Professional Engineers, and he dearly loved his family and pets and was a great friend, neighbor and co-worker.
Surviving are his brother, Junior (Barb) Payton; several nephews and nieces, Brad (Nancy) Payton, Bret (Cathy) Payton, Pam (Dennis) Alexander, and Robyn (Troy) Cunningham all of Alexandria, and Linda Payton of Valparaiso, Ind.; several aunts, uncles, and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Lena Payton; his brother, Jerry Payton; his sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Gene Gross; his great-niece and nephew, Delana and Keaton Alexander; and his beloved dog, Harley.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Gathering will be held Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Alexandria Community Center, 315 S. Harrison St. from 4 to 6 p.m. Interment of cremains will take place at Park View Cemetery in Alexandria at the convenience of the family.
