Russell L. Tarter

March 20, 1940 - May 2, 2013

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. — Russell L. Tarter, 73, Alexandria, went to be with the Lord on May 2, 2013, at Community Parkview Care Center, Elwood, following an extended illness.

Born on March 20, 1940, to Herbert and Annie (Hislope) Tarter in Faubush, Ky., he served our country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married Mattie “Lucy” (Fugett) on April 20, 1963. After working for 30+ years for General Motors, Russell retired in 1993 from Delco Remy. Russell was a devoted member of Main Street Wesleyan Church, United Auto Workers Local 662, NRA, and the National Muzzle Loaders Association. His passion was custom inscription on powder horns called “Schrimshaw.” For 25 years in Friendship, Ind., he had a booth during the National Muzzle Loading Association to show his custom powder horns.

Russell is survived by his loving wife, Mattie “Lucy” of Alexandria; daughters, Tonya (Tony) Jacobs and Tammy (Mark) Krez, all of Elwood; son,  Stephen (Jeni) Tarter of Summitville; daughter, Becky (Ron) Rathert of Frankton; 21 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, John Tarter of Anderson; sister, Pat Davis of Carmel; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents; and sister, Joan Tarter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dunnichay Funeral Home, Elwood, with the Rev. Ron Becker officiating. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Muncie, with the Elwood VFW American Honor Guard conducting military services.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday.
