Wilma Jean ‘Susie’ Washburn

March 6, 1926 - May 15, 2013

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. —  Wilma Jean “Susie” Washburn, 87, Alexandria, died May 15, 2013, at Bethany Pointe Health Campus, Anderson, after a brief illness.

She was born March 6, 1926, in Anderson, the daughter of Edwin Hurst and Grace (Sayre) Hurst, and resided in Alexandria all of her lifetime.

Wilma was a graduate of Alexandria High School, Class of 1944. She later graduated from the Fort Wayne School of Business. Wilma was devoted to the family farm and her farming family. She was always anxious to get this year’s crop out. As a working farm wife and mother, she became the farm “go fer” and was always running after parts, supplies and so forth.  She also made sure that her family and helpers were always fed. Wilma was the rock and foundation of the Washburn family, and her grandchildren were special source of enjoyment for her.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Washburn of Alexandria, and Peggy (Ed) Torok of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two sons, Tim (Christy) Washburn and Dale Washburn, all of Alexandria; granddaughters, Jessica Washburn, Erin Bassett and Kristen Maynard; grandsons, Michael Torok and Ryan Trimbath; great-grandchildren, Jace, Kullan, Jena, Arianna, Anwen, Asher, Kiernan and Lochlan; brother, Robert (Mary Olive) Hurst of Solon, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 45 years, Ray Washburn in 1990; mother and father-in-law, Nellie and Samuel Washburn; and a niece, Marcia Watkins.

Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, with Pastor Jerry Young officiating. Interment will follow in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alexandria Emergency Ambulance Fund through the funeral home.
