I. Gene Barrett

June 28, 1922 - May 15, 2013

ANDERSON, Ind. — I. Gene Barrett, 90, of Anderson, passed away on May 15, 2013, at St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital.

He was born on June 28, 1922, in Petersburg, Ind., and resided most of his life in the Anderson and Muncie area.

Gene graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1941 and Purdue University in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot from 1942 to 1947 and also played the trombone in the Air Force Band and had the opportunity to play for Bob Hope’s USO Shows.  

He retired from Delco Remy Division of General Motors after 32 years of service.

Gene was a member of Anderson Noon Exchange Club and Sall Baters Band, with whom he played the trombone. He was a former member of Trinity Episcopal Church and a current member of St. Anne’s Anglican Church in Anderson.

He is survived by his loving spouse, Jane (Jellison) Barrett, whom he married in 1956; sons, Douglas Barrett of Greenwood and David (Tammy) Barrett of Fayetteville, Ga.; grandchildren, Joshua Barrett, Indianapolis, Justin (Courtney) Barrett, Bargersville, Tiffani (Joshua) Gimple, Hickory, Ky., and  Bryan Barrett, Dallas Ga.; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Pearl Barrett; brother, Oliver Barrett; and sister, Genieve White.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson, with Father P.T. Morgan of St. Anne’s Anglican Church officiating. Burial will be in East Maplewood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
