John Goree Jr.

Feb. 19, 1926 - Jan. 6, 2014

ANDERSON — John W. Goree Jr., 87, Anderson, passed away peacefully Jan. 6, 2014, at St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Birmingham, Ala., he graduated from Parker High School. He later obtained a master's degree in business.

John married Margarette (Wilson), and from that union they had three children, Walter, Roy and Sandra. She later died in 1948. Years later he remarried Barbara (Wills) and from that union they had a daughter, Jean Carol. He later re-married Mary (Smith) of Chicago, Ill., and they remained united in marriage until her death in 2000.

He enjoyed walking, gardening, spending time with his pets and reading the Bible. He was a great and loving caregiver to his mother and his sister.

To cherish his memory are children, Sandra (Jerry) Brown and Roy Goree; grandchildren, Angela Brown-Nunn, Tammy (Darren) Sloss, Anthony Brown, Kevin Goree, Kim (Theron) Vaughn, Donita (Sean) Copeland, Angela Jones, Michelle Goree, Patricia Goree, Carla Kelly, Donita Goree, and Terrance Goree; a host of great-grandchildren; and companion and close friend, Lealer Redfield.

He was preceded in death by parents, Henry and Ollie Walls; wife, Margarette Goree; son, Walter Goree; daughters, Jean Carol Goree and Diana Summerville; grandsons, Stacy Brown and David Goree; sister, Maggie (Walter) Davis; aunts, Grace Hawkins and Emma Barnes; in-laws, James and Martha Merkerson.

Thanks to everyone for their cards and prayers. Special thanks to nurse, Pat.

A private service was held.
