ANDERSON — Virgil Eugene Cates, 95, of Anderson passed away Jan. 15, 2014, at his family’s home after an extended illness.
He was born May 28, 1918, in Anderson, was a lifelong Anderson resident and graduated from Anderson High School. Virgil retired from Delco Remy and was also a self-employed electrician and refrigeration technician. In addition to his work, he also enjoyed woodworking.
Virgil is survived by his sons, John (fiancée, Kathy) Cates and Bill Cates, all of Anderson; 16 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Jerry Patterson of Athens, Ala.; daughter-in-law, Annelie Cates of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elva Mae; daughter, Susan Patterson; and sons, Jerry Cates, Don Cates, Larry Cates and David Cates.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory with Hans Sigg officiating. Burial will follow immediately in Maplewood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
