Stephen B. Givens

March 5, 1941 - Sept. 13, 2012

GREENWOOD, Ind. — Stephen B. Givens of Greenwood died at his home on Sept. 13, 2012, after bravely battling a longtime illness.

The eldest of three children, Steve was born in Anderson to Dallas and Dessie Mae (Kreegar) Givens on March 5, 1941.

On Aug. 8, 1964, Steve married Jane Prible, who loyally remained by his side and tirelessly cared for him until his last day. Steve’s pride was his daughter, Stephanie (Kenneth) Shirley of Orange, Va., and their sons, Noah Henson, also of Orange, and Jacob Henson of Greenwood; and his son, Greg (Cortney) Givens of Jasonville, and their sons, Griffith and Moses Givens, also of Jasonville, all of whom survive him. Steve’s most cherished activity was rocking his newborn grandsons in his recliner. Steve also is survived by his mother; his brothers, David (Lola) Givens of Lapel, and Douglas (Susan) Givens of Gambier, Ohio; and nieces and nephews.

Steve attended undergraduate school at Indiana University, where he was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity. Steve then earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University-Indianapolis and was admitted to the Indiana State Bar Association in 1967. After serving as Deputy Commissioner of the Public Service Commission of Indiana from 1967 until 1970, Steve worked as corporate counsel for various divisions of American Water Works Service Co., Inc. from 1970 until his retirement in 2002. Steve and Jane raised their children in Richmond, then moved to Greenwood with the relocation of Indiana-American Water Works.

As a teenager, Steve was the photographer for the award-winning Anderson High School yearbook. His photographs of the Anderson High School gymnasium were published in national media. Steve furthered enjoyment of his law career with memberships in the American, Johnson County, and Wayne County bar associations, American Water Works Association and the Environmental Committee of Indiana Chamber of Commerce. Steve served as director of the National Association of Water Companies from 1983 until 1991 and as chairman of the Indiana Chapter National Association of Water Companies. Steve blessed his community and family through his service on the Board of Directors of Richmond Swim Club, a member of the Advisory Council of the Center for Economic Education at Indiana University East, a member of the Board of Director of Interfaith Housing Corporation, the Board of Trustees of Christ United Methodist Church Indianapolis, and the Administrative Board, Finance Committee, and Board of Trustees of Central United Methodist Church Richmond.

Steve’s funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Christ United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center and one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will be in Earlham Cemetery in Richmond.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, Andrew’s Harvest, 8540 U.S. 31 South, Indianapolis, IN 46227.
