Letter: Maintenance fund hearing not harmless

Maintenance fundhearing not harmless

Concerning the “556 Zirkle and Cooper Drain” -- taxes average 62 cents per acre and will go up to $6 per acre. As harmless as Cause No. 2013-05 may sound, this and the maintenance fund hearing will have far reaching implications.

The hearing, scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 9 a.m., in the Board of Commissioners’ Room, in the Henry County Court House in New Castle, will be regarding property assessments; that, unlike many, will benefit a few, at the cost of many. Many - unlike Corporate America - will absorb the burdensome cost; some are seniors, living on fixed incomes. These same seniors will receive very little, if any, benefit from the proposed assessments.

Remember if this cost can be imposed on those on the West side of Henry County, it can surely be imposed on anyone, anywhere. The next area to be assessed will be Fall Creek.

See you at the Aug. 14 meeting!
