Viewpoint: Affordable Care Act will waste millions

---- — On Oct. 1, with much hype and fanfare, the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, rolled out. With over 300 million people in America, and an estimated 48 million uninsured, there must have been hundreds of thousands sign up, right? Wrong. Well, there must have been tens of thousands. No? Thousands? Try again. Hundreds? Nope. Six. That’s right. According to the Obama administration, a grand total of six people signed up for Obamacare the first day. One comedian (I think it was Jon Stewart) said more people walked on the moon than signed up for Obamacare the first day. I would add at considerably less cost, too.

Now, it would be easy to jump on the bandwagon and blame the Obama administration, but I’d like to point out the obvious, that this was inevitable. But, I will say I believe that by the Obama administration awarding no-bid contracts to companies that were incompetent, but being paid back for their campaign contributions, didn’t help.

Why do I say Obamacare is bound to fail? Because it is being implemented by the federal government. It is my opinion that the federal government cannot run one agency effectively, efficiently, and under budget. I challenge anyone reading this letter to name one. The Affordable Care Act will be no different.

Let’s look at some examples: The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Hurricane Katrina. Need I say more? It was disclosed in April by David Montoya with HUD that approximately $700 million simply disappeared. And now they are dealing with super storm Sandy. I wonder how much fraud and waste will come out of that.

How about Medicare? I heard Kirsten Powers hold that program up as a shining example. Simply enter “Medicare Fraud” in your favorite search engine, and you will find a long list of fraud, including a $67 million fraud, a $29 million scheme, and the list goes on and on. If the media did their job, they could bust a scam artist every day for Medicare fraud.

Consider the military. Surely they’re efficient. Wrong. Does anyone else remember the $435 hammer that the Department of Defense (DOD) was buying back in 1983, during the Reagan administration? Again, use any search engine, and you can find it. But that was then, what about now? Consider how politicians demand the DOD buy planes, bombs, and other military equipment, simply because some or all of the parts are built in their district, bringing jobs to their district. These politicians waste millions, or even billions of dollars on equipment the DOD doesn’t want or need.

The sad part is, all this waste, fraud and corruption of our money is just a drop in the bucket compared to what the Affordable Care Act will waste. Someone counted President Obama saying at least 26 times, “If you like your plan, you can keep it. Period.” We know how that is working out, at considerable cost to the policy holders. The sad truth is, politicians lie. They will say anything to get what they want. With Obamacare consisting of one-sixth of the economy of the United States, I recommend to anyone reading this to save as much money as possible for the future. You’re going to need it.
