Even though Mother Nature hasn’t really decided that winter is behind us and the calendar page is ready to be turned to April, racing springs to life this weekend in Anderson.
First on the schedule is tonight’s opening of the harness racing season at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino.
Patrons who enjoy just about anything at HP will find something new. The biggest changes involve the harness racing. The racing surface has been rebuilt and reports indicate it is a huge hit among the drivers and trainers who have experienced it firsthand in qualifiers held earlier this month.
The corners have more banking and are uniform from end to end. The first post time has been moved up to 5:15 p.m. from 5:45 the previous few seasons. There is a new starting gate vehicle and theater seating throughout the grandstand area.
For diners, menus have been changed with new offerings presented. The Terrace Showroom has a stage that will offer national acts as well as local talent.
Overall, there are great reasons for people all over the state to consider Hoosier Park as an entertainment destination this spring and summer.
On the other side of the city, Anderson Speedway is ready to begin its auto racing schedule with one slight and quite reasonable alteration.
The Anderson Speedway season was scheduled to have the engines fire up on Saturday night. But considering the forecast of low temperatures and rain for that day, the decision was made to open on Sunday afternoon instead.
Practice will begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by qualifications at 2 p.m. and feature racing at 3.
For a while it was enough to be able to watch auto racing on television beginning with the Daytona 500. But it is time to experience the roar of the engines and the smell of the rubber heating up on the quarter-mile layout in Anderson.
The racing schedule shifts into high gear next month with racing every Saturday night and a special Sunday event at the end of April featuring Sprints and Midgets.
Perhaps the opening of these two racing seasons will finally chase this long, tiresome winter weather out of Indiana for good.
In summary Beginning tonight and stretching across the entire weekend, Anderson racing fans will have numerous options right here in the city.
