Scott Underwood: Summertime is fair time, Colts time

Summer officially began Friday and the annual Church of God Global Gathering officially opened Saturday at Anderson University, the first of dozens of interesting events in Madison County this summer.

Among the major happenings before summer officially ends on Sept. 20, the Madison County 4-H Fair and the Indianapolis Colts training camp are top of mind.

The fair is first up, July 21-27, at the county fairgrounds adjacent to Beulah Park in Alexandria. If you are at all countrified, the fair has something to attract you.

I grew up showing cattle and hogs at the Wabash County 4-H Fair and the Indiana State Fair. That part of the experience was hard work but fun and memorable. But what I really loved was the midway rides and fair food. Give me a corn dog, corn on the cob, candied apple, elephant ear and lemon shake-up, and I’ll follow you anywhere — provided, of course, that you don’t mind my whining about a stomach ache!

Here in Madison County, kids have been spending weeks (some of them months) preparing their 4-H entries for competition. For livestock, they must provide the right diet, the right amount of exercise and the right training to get their animals looking and behaving their best for the show ring.

If you haven’t made a habit of spending a day at the county fair, I encourage you to do so this year. You’ll come away from it with a new respect and knowledge of 4-H projects. Watch the livestock judging. Ride the rides. Sample the food. You’ll have a great time. If you have to suffer a little stomach ache, well, it’s worth it!

If you prefer to avoid the temptations of fair food, Colts camp might be a better option. The team is scheduled to report to camp at Anderson University the weekend of July 27-28. It will be the Colts’ fourth consecutive year back in Anderson for training camp.
