Scott Underwood: Reddick, THB bring 'Intelligent Life' to readers

A science geek. A sports geek. A comic book geek. A pop culture geek.

And a local geek to bring them all to life.

David Reddick’s new comic strip, “Intelligent Life,” debuts on our Comics page today. You’ll find it in the lower right corner of the page, in a space heretofore occupied by one of my favorite strips, “Get Fuzzy.”

When we at The Herald Bulletin first heard that Reddick’s new strip was going into syndication, we had to have it. I started thinking right away about which daily strip to sacrifice.

As much as I like the wacky humor and artwork of “Get Fuzzy,” I realized it was among our less popular strips. And, after reviewing several samples of “Intelligent Life,” I concluded that it is simply a better, more original strip.

King Features, one of the world’s largest suppliers of syndicated materials to newspapers, marketed Reddick’s new strip, lending immediate credibility.

When a King representative visited The Herald Bulletin to promote Reddick’s creation, he described himself as a crusty old guy with no interest in science fiction and other “geeky” things. But “Intelligent Life” won him over with the same sort of quirky charm that the TV series sensation “The Big Bang Theory” has wielded to woo legions of fans.

Reddick should be highly familiar to readers of The Herald Bulletin. He was a cartoonist at the newspaper for six years, ending in the early 2000s. Folks who worked with him here remember Reddick for — surprise, surprise — being a science fiction geek with a unique sense of humor and perspective on life.

The mention of Reddick’s name to a veteran of our newsroom will elicit a smile and a recollection of one of his comic panels or something he did or said.
