You Said It: About vouchers, animal shelters and basketball player Kelsey Key

ANDERSON, Ind. — Each Monday, The Herald Bulletin publishes “You Said It,” a compilation of reader comments from www.theheraldbulletin.com coupled with responses by the newspaper’s editorial board.

Elwood plans for a new and bigger animal shelter. (Article published March 24)

  •  “Very cool that my hometown of Elwood is building a new animal shelter building with an adoption center and spay and neuter clinic. How great! Way to go Elwood!”

THB: By the looks of the photos and the description of the property, this project is way overdue. It’s a good thing for the animals as well as Elwood.

THB Sports Editor Rick Teverbaugh opined in his column that leaving Kelsey Key off the Indiana All-Star Team was a poor choice. (March 23)

  •  “I am with you, Rick, and I find Mr. Hall’s comment almost insulting that, ‘I have to disappoint eight to 10 Kelsey Keys every year.’ A basketball game ultimately comes down to one statistic: The team that scores the most points wins. Period. Every year, there is only one leading scorer in the state (not 8-10) and when you have one player who leads that category over all the others (and by a sizable margin), to keep that player off the all-star team is a farce. It just shows how much politics goes into even ‘pure’ things like sports.”

THB: We think this omission goes to show that sports is not “pure,” not even on the high school level. If being the top female high school basketball scorer in the state does not get you on this team, what does?

The Indiana Supreme Court last week upheld the nation’s broadest school voucher program in a ruling supporters say could set a national precedent as other states look to build or expand programs that use public money to allow students to attend private schools. (March 26)
