Primus Mootry: Observations on the Pacers, bigotry and climate

Here are some opinions about a few subjects that may be of interest to you. As always, though, you are entitled to your own opinions on some of these subjects, but not your own facts.

• The Indiana Pacers — Go Pacers! Well, maybe. I call them “The Pacemakers.” You know, that’s the device they implant in your chest to keep your heart beating steady. In spite of a spectacular regular season, at times the Pacers seem to have lost their rhythm. We don’t seem to know which team is going to show up in the playoffs — the regular season team or those pacemaker guys.

A good friend of mine who is a former collegiate basketball star tells me they have “locker room” issues. Their big guy, Roy Hibbert, as much as said so himself. If players can’t get along off the court, apparently it’s very hard for them to function as a team on the court. Whatever the reason for their sometimes heartbreaking bad play, they came up great Sunday night. Let’s hope they remember basketball is a team sport, and go all the way.

• Basketball and bigotry — I’m talking about the Los Angeles Clippers. Last I heard, following owner Donald Sterling’s public racist, bigoted chatter, the Clippers have a new sheriff in town. He is multi-millionaire, Dick Parsons. Parsons, an African-American, is the former chairman of Time Warner and Citicorp. In the meantime, a number of wealthy African-Americans have expressed an interest in buying the team, including Oprah Winfrey and boxer Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

My guess is that Sterling won’t sell without a fight, even against Mayweather. Aside from the legalities of stripping his ownership of the team, my guess is that a fight probably would drive up the price of the franchise. Sterling may be a bigot, but nobody said he is a fool. At any rate, when the dust settles, he will still be a billionaire. All things considered, I find it difficult to work up tears for him.
