Anderson residents donated 42,663 pounds of food

On behalf of the NALC Branch 489 (Anderson post office) I would like to thank everyone who donated food or made a monetary donation on May 10 to our food drive. We are happy to report that we collected 42,663 pounds of food in Anderson alone.

This year the local food pantries came directly to the post office and picked up the food as soon as we brought it in making it immediately available for distribution. This food comes at a critical time for many families who rely on school meals to help feed their children and whose children will soon be out of school for the summer.

Our total for the entire Branch was 63,601 pounds of food. This includes Alexandria, Elwood, Frankton, Lapel, Summitville, Pendleton and Yorktown.

I would like to recognize the many volunteers who helped collect the food and unload and reload it for transportation including: Leo G. White DeMolay, Madison County Rainbow Girls, Operation Love, United Way, Second Harvest Food Bank, Glad Tidings Church, Helping Hands Food Pantry and family members of letter carriers and retired letter carriers. We could not do this without you.

Of course none of this is possible without the hard work of our city and rural carriers who do double duty on this day each year. Thank you for 22 years of successful food drives.

A huge thank-you to Nichol Avenue Pizza Hut and AFL-CIO who donated food or made monetary donations to help feed our volunteers.
