You Said It: About the wheel tax, Ravens softball and cold beer sales

(Continued)

ANDERSON, Ind. —

THB: Way to go, Ravens! Despite two losses — Friday and Saturday — in the NCAA Div. III Softball World Series, you had a magical season.

Convenience stores sue for right to sell cold beer. (May 15)

  • “It’s been so long since I’ve lived in Indiana I forgot they had this ridiculous law. I’ve lived in three other states since moving away from Indiana, and the liquor stores seem to be doing a thriving business in two of those three. The other state, North Carolina, has state-operated liquor stores (another ridiculous concept), and I don’t think they even sell beer.”
  •  “I really don’t understand what the real issue is here. Indiana is the only state that continues the fight over liquor. The liquor stores seem to have a powerful lobby. Some of the arguments they pose don’t seem to make much sense to consumers. I would hope that the state Legislature would look to other states and work toward pulling Indiana in line with the rest of the nation. The fight over this issue is not worth it.”

THB: There are some odd liquor laws and hoops that establishments must jump through, but at the end of the day the convenience store is just another retail business trying to make a buck. Any retail business that adheres to the laws of selling beer and liquor should be able to offer cold beer whether it be a convenience store or grocery store.
