Viewpoint: Community support continues for Athletic Pool restoration

---- — For many years, many of us have approached downtown from Eighth Street and looked sadly at the forlorn looking Athletic Pool and the lonely looking site behind it. Athletic Park came to life again this summer. Brad Land and Jody Townsend brought us the inaugural year of our very own city market. It was a great success, thanks to Brad and Jody and their many vendors and their wonderful fresh goods. We are already looking forward to next year.

Onward Alliance also wishes to thank everyone who supports our efforts to restore the Athletic Park swimming pool to its former glory. Community support will be critical in preserving and maintaining one of Anderson’s most architecturally significant (and fun!) buildings. Many thanks go to The Herald Bulletin for their coverage and to Mayor Kevin Smith and his helpful staff and employees for their support.

Our recent pancake breakfast fundraiser for the pool was a great success and there are many folks to thank. Special thanks go to UAW Locals 662, 663, 1963 and 957 for partnering with us on this fundraiser. And finally, we must thank all who bought tickets and/or gave donations to the event. This generosity from our community is heartwarming.

With the Anderson community’s continuing support, the Athletic Pool can be saved. Once again, we more than doubled our original donation projections. We will be depositing more than $900 to our account at the Madison County Community Foundation (who also deserves our thanks). All funds will be going toward the rehabilitation, restoration and maintenance of the pool, a local treasure that is listed prominently on Indiana Historic Landmarks Foundation’s most endangered list of significant structures. We appreciate and understand IHLF’s interest in preserving and improving our “significant structure,” but it is the community support for this project that spurs us onward.

Those wishing to make tax-deductible donations to our efforts may do so by sending a check written to: Madison County Community Foundation, 33 W. 10th St. Suite 600, Anderson, IN 46016. Please designate your donation to The Athletic Pool Project (TAPP).
