Viewpoint: Obama never lets a crisis go to waste

By David Hooper Anderson resident

---- — Last spring, when President Obama closed the White House to school kids on their spring break trips (while keeping it open for Jay Z and Beyonce) claiming no funds available due to the mean Republicans and their sequestration, I thought he had gone as low as he could (punishing school kids because he didn’t get his way). Unfortunately, I was wrong; he could go very much lower.

This past week, he barricaded the Lincoln Memorial (for the first time ever) and the World War II Memorial (both are not buildings, but open air memorials) from 80- and 90-year-old veterans. I’ll bet when they were storming the sands of Iwo Jima and the beaches of Normandy, they never imagined that nearly 70 years later they would have to storm the barricades of Obama in Washington, D.C., to see the memorial dedicated to them for their sacrifices and services. And for many of them this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity given to them by grateful Americans.

Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi was cavorting with illegal immigrants on the supposed also closed National Mail and thanking President Obama for making this area available to them (That just goes to show the contempt Obama holds for the “Greatest Generation” as he is trying so hard to create the “dependent generation.”)

Also, Army chaplains and priests were forbidden to hold religious services for service personnel, because the government was shut down.

But I think we finally hit the bottom when the Department of Defense said they couldn’t pay death benefits or fly families to meet the returning bodies of service personnel killed in action, because they didn’t have the funds. The same day a recruiting office spent $57,000 on a mechanical bull for a “recruiting tool.” Talk about a lot of bull.

Also before the shutdown, the Congress had made funds available for this if the shutdown occurred, but the White House and Defense Department and a bunch of lawyers found a way to block these funds.

All of these things could have been fixed with executive orders, which the president issues all the time when he wants something. But Obama is a firm believer to “never let a good crisis go to waste.” And he does this by inflicting the maximum pain and inconvenience on the most people possible, and then tries to blame it all on the Republicans. The contempt he shows for our service personnel (and even for our average citizens) is unparalleled in America history. He and his administration are a national disgrace.
