Editorial: Change is making a stop at Pendleton

---- — We think the Indiana Department of Transportation has listened to our complaints about the new stoplights at Indiana 38 and Interstate 69.

Or we're getting used to the delays.

Now a few weeks old, the lights confront drivers as they try to leave or enter I-69, as well as merely driving along Ind. 38 across the interstate. To put it mildly, drivers weren't ready for the slowdowns.

It can take anywhere from 30 seconds to one minute to wait for the lights to change. And traffic does get backed up during rush hours to and from Indianapolis. So maybe we're feeling a little better about the wait — particularly if we know we need at least an additional one minute start from home each morning.

But what we can't quite tolerate yet is the inability to turn right during red lights. Well, the ability is there — as many drivers are simply disregarding the ban on right turns and proceeding onto Ind. 38. Some have driven right across the white plastic poles that are to hinder the turns.

So despite the safety of not turning on red, it might be best to put those yield signs back up and hope that drivers pay attention to what's coming across the bridge.

The change has been frustrating, though most drivers assume this was INDOT acting on our collective best behalf.

But what worries most drivers now is what's coming. INDOT is pledging to make adjustments to the new restrictions — the right turn may be freeing up.

But what worries most drivers now is what's coming. Lights are to be installed along Ind. 38 west of Pendleton at Enterprise Drive and Heritage Way. The roads essentially create a loop back to apartments, fast-food restaurants and businesses.

Most can understand the need for a light at Enterprise where trucks and cars struggle to pull out quick enough onto Ind. 38 from the restaurants and gas station. But many are not so sure about the need to slow traffic down even more at Heritage.

Do any businesses, or residents for that matter, need to have drivers wait even longer to get downtown? Or potential customers be deterred from driving to shops?

Progress may be coming to Pendleton. It just seems like it's bringing an extra one-minute wait we don't want to make.

In summary Progress may be coming into Pendleton but most drivers don't want to wait an extra minute to see stoplights coming in.
