Heather Bremer: Attention, Trekkies: Starbase Indy is back
If Star Trek fans can find the strength to separate themselves from their new “Star Trek” DVDs, Thanksgiving weekend holds an event designed specifically for them. Starbase Indy, a holiday tradition, returns to Indianapolis again this year. A one-day, fan-supported convention last year, Starbase Indy will once again follow a three-day format, running Nov. 27-29 at the Indianapolis Marriott East.

A musical Christmas present
ANDERSON — Long-time organist Larry Goins is providing Madison County residents with another Christmas spectacular this holiday season. The piano and organ instructor, who has been playing since he was 5 years old, will be performing Friday at Paramount Theatre, 1124 Meridian St.

Bringing back school spirit
ANDERSON — Anderson High School basketball at the Wigwam isn’t what it used to be, according to AHS alumni Kim Guthrie and Suzanne Kucharczyk. Kucharczyk remembers feeling chills when the lights went out before the game, signaling the start of the traditional Indian maiden and mascot dance.

Guthrie to give first Wigwam performance
ANDERSON — When the Anderson High School boys basketball team gathers on Nov. 28 to play its home opener, senior Sophie Guthrie also will be preparing to perform. Guthrie will portray this year’s Indian maiden, the female counterpart to the AHS Indians’ mascot. The two will perform the school’s traditional tribal dance to rev up the crowd.

Legion to host Thanksgiving dinner
PENDLETON — The Pendleton American Legion Post 117, 611 W. State St., will have its annual Thanksgiving pitch-in dinner for members, their families and guests Sunday. Doors open at noon and the meal will be served at 2 p.m. Meat will be furnished and those attending should bring a covered dish.

Santa rides trolley to Mounds this week
ANDERSON — Santa Claus will arrive at Mounds Mall, riding in a city-provided trolley, at 6 p.m. Saturday. He’ll show up at the east entrance near Garfield’s restaurant. Visits and pictures with Santa will be available Nov. 27 to Dec. 24 at varying hours. Photo pet nights with Santa are set for Dec. 8 and 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. Dogs and cats must be on a leash or in a carrier.

Middletown Christmas parade set for Dec. 12
MIDDLETOWN — Middletown’s annual Christmas parade will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12. The “Peace on Earth” parade will originate at the East Locust Street entrance to Dietrich Park and proceed west along Locust Street past Gazebo Park and the Municipal Building to 8th Street.

The tragic events earlier this month at Fort Hood, Texas, prompted me to reflect on my own experiences when I was stationed at that sprawling military post four and a half decades ago. It was a different world then. The enemy was half a world in either direction, or so we thought. Security was relatively lax; you could come and go at any of several gates with no questions asked.

Many of Anderson’s downtown businesses no longer exist.
To a degree that’s expected as business owners retire or relocate. But sometimes they simply aren’t replaced, at least with businesses in kind.
