NEW CASTLE — Enjoy music from the 1920s, ’30s and more during The Big Read Band Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the New Castle-Henry County Public Library. The Raintree Community Band will present music from the era of “The Maltese Falcon,” which is the featured book of The Big Read.

The evening’s music will include Cole Porter in Concert (a medley featuring “You’re the Top,” “You Do Something to Me,” “Night and Day” and “Just One of Those Things”) and Twentiana (a montage that showcases of songs of the 1920s — “I Want to Be Happy,” “I’m Looking over a Four-Leaf Clover,” “Carolina in the Morning,” “Bye, Bye Blackbird,” “Charleston,” “Tea for Two” and “Hallelujah!”).

The Raintree Community Band is a group of musicians of all ages who began meeting in the spring. This will be their second concert. They also performed on July 4 before the fireworks display at Memorial Park.

“We are always looking for musicians. We do not require auditions. Just come in, sit down and play,” said band director Rachel Eldridge. “This band gives people a place to play. We started this band to do something positive in the community and give people a good outlet for what they have been trained to do.”

The Raintree Community Band is also planning to play in conjunction with the Community Choir on Dec. 5.

This event is part of The Big Read: Henry County Reads “The Maltese Falcon.” The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.
