Speech contest results announced

NEW CASTLE — The Henry County Republican Club hosted its 16th annual Speech Contest for High School Students on March 7.

The topic was “How would the fiscal cliff affect my future for better or worse?” The results follows.

Champion:  Tony Kinnett, senior, Heritage Hall Christian School; son of Michael Kinnett of Jefferson Township and Sonya Kinnett-Ruedlinger of Ellettsville.

Runner-up:  Corwin Marcum, freshman, New Castle High School; son of Penny Marcum of New Castle.

Third Place: Lacy Shirey, junior, home-school; daughter of Ed and Marla Shirey of Stony Creek Township.

Other competitors (listed alphabetically):

Nathan DeYoung, junior, Shenandoah High School; son of Randy and Stephanie DeYoung of Jefferson Township.

Michael Froedge, junior, Blue River Valley H.S.; son of Eric & Melinda Froedge of Henry Township.

Dani Morey, senior, home-school; daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Merrill and Jena Morey of Spiceland Township.

Lexi Morey, sophomore, home-school; daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Merrill and Jena Morey.

Taylor Smith, senior, Tri H.S.; son of Tim & Jody Smith of New Castle.

Awards were:  Champion, $100; runner-up, $75, and third place, $50. Competitors received a one-year associate membership in the Henry County Republican Club.

Out-of-county guest judges included State Sen. Jean Leising, R-Oldenburg; Rushville Mayor Mike Pavey and Frank Thompson of Franklin County Economic Development Corporation. Mike Gerrish served as timekeeper. Nate LaMar served as chairman.
