Community Briefs: Jan. 9

Author Thom at Pendleton Library

PENDLETON — Author James Alexander Thom will visit the Pendleton Community Public Library as well as the Pendleton Historical Museum Saturday, Jan. 25.

Thom will talk about his upcoming Civil War novel, “Fire in the Water” at the Pendleton Historical Museum at 11 a.m., and at 2 p.m. he will be at the Pendleton Community Public Library to discuss the story of Mary Ingles in “Follow the River.”

Library attendees will also have the unique opportunity to enjoy native drummers from 1-2 p.m. For book lovers, Barnes & Noble will be at the library offering Thom novels for purchase, and Thom will sign participants’ books.

Bereavement session canceled

ANDERSON — The bereavement support ministry scheduled for today at Bethany Christian Church has been canceled due to inclement weather. The next session will be held Thursday, Feb. 13.

Legion to host monthly breakfast

LAPEL — The Lapel American Legion will have its monthly breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

The menu consists of scrambled or fried eggs, sausage gravy and biscuits, fried potatoes, pancakes, French toast, juice and coffee.

Price is $6 for all-you-can-eat.

Retired secretaries postponing lunch

ANDERSON — The Anderson Community School Retired Secretaries group is postponing the January luncheon meeting set for Monday.

The group will meet the second Monday in February.

Joan Mercer, an English teacher who helped organize the the orientation, said the mentor program, which has been in place for several years, has been effective in new students make the high school transition.
