Mainstage season ticket holders cast their ballots

ANDERSON, Ind. — For Anderson’s Mainstage Theatre, a season of hard work reaches its culmination on “Star Night.”

Saturday, Mainstage supporters met for an evening of food, laughter and for the opportunity to acknowledge the talent, creativity and dedication of everyone involved in community theater. The best actors and actresses, directors, choreographers, set designers, music directors and costume designers of the season were recognized and applauded for their outstanding contributions.

The nomination process begins with the directors. President of the board Bill Malone explained, “Every director of a show is responsible for choosing who best represents his/her production in each category.”

The decision then rests with the season ticket holders who receive the nominations via ballot. Malone said, “After all, it is the people who usually watch every show of the season that should be the ones to decide.”

For the 2012 season, the musical “Oklahoma,” directed by Rick Vale, was voted as the Best Show. Vale was also recognized for Best Set Design for “Willy Wonka.” Best Actor was a tie between Daniel Wohlberg as Curly McLain in “Oklahoma” and Gabriel Porch as John Proctor in “The Crucible.” Best Actress was Mindy Morton as Audrey in “Little Shop of Horrors.”

A complete list of winners can be found on the Mainstage home page at http://www.mainstagetheatre.org/.

Various theater-themed items were auctioned throughout the evening, with proceeds benefiting the Mainstage.

The 2013 preseason will begin in March with the musical “Xanadu.” Regular season productions will include the popular Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “South Pacific” and Mel Brooks’ musical comedy “Young Frankenstein.” There will be six regular season productions, with a Sunday matinee added to the five evening shows, as well as two bonus “non-season” shows.
