Speaking from experience

AHS speech team places third in competition

ANDERSON — People love competition, even if the competition is who gave the best speech.

Competition is what drives Anderson High School’s speech team, coached by Paul Partezana and captained by senior Alexa Eden. They recently won third place at the Maconaquah High School speech competition, the team’s first major success in Partezana’s nine years as coach.

The trophy now sits proudly in his classroom, and the team of seven students has designs on earning more before they’re done.

Senior Trystahn Voss said he joined the speech team for the competition.

“It gets really competitive at the meets over the course of a year,” Voss said, “because you keep seeing the same guys every time.”

Voss gets the most out of every weekend meet. For the last meet at Noblesville High School he was triple-enrolled, meaning he had to give three different speeches per round. There are typically four rounds in a day, so Voss will be giving a total of 12 speeches over the course of the meet.

The most popular event for the students at the speech team practice seemed to be the impromptu speech. Eden said competitors draw a topic which can range from a single word, like terror, to a quote. Students then have 30 seconds to come up with an idea of what to say before starting a three-minute speech.
