People and pets: New Horizons hosts fun benefit

New Horizons hosts fun benefit event

ANDERSON — Cats, dogs, rabbits, llamas, goats and even some reptiles — those were among the animals that turned up last year at New Horizons United Methodist Church’s annual People and Pets Extravaganza.

Not only did the animals receive a blessing, they and their owners had a good time. This year, the fourth annual free event takes place Saturday, July 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“It’s always a lot of fun,” said Nancy Tatum, communications director at New Horizons.

“We’re looking forward to seeing more of our friends in the community. It’s a fun day for everyone.” At the same time, the day of community outreach helps to support local food pantries for people and shelters for animals through donations of non-perishable food or pet items.

Kids can wear themselves out on bounce houses, have their faces painted, visit a fire truck, or check out llamas and an alpaca, perhaps with her baby.

The Indy Dog and Disc Club will be playing Frisbee. The Humane Society and Animal Protection League will be on site with pets for adoption as well.

Pastor Gina Kirkland will be blessing pets at various times throughout the event. Animals to be blessed should be leashed or caged.

Enjoy live music, free hot dogs and lemonade while checking out all the fun. A number of vendors will be on hand, offering jewelry, candles, pet items and more. Additional food vendors and a bake sale ensure that no one leaves hungry.

The event is free but everyone is encouraged to bring either nonperishable food items for local food pantries or items for the animals awaiting adoption at local facilities. Participants should not bring opened or outdated items. The generosity of folks who came to last year’s People and Pets enabled 500 pounds of food to be sent to local human food pantries, and another 500 pounds for animals.
