Explore the local state park and become a master of nature

ANDERSON — People who want to learn more about nature and then share their knowledge with others should consider taking the Indiana Master Naturalist class at Mounds State Park this summer.

The Indiana Master Naturalist Program is an educational and volunteer initiative developed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Purdue University Extension. Its goal is to bring together natural-resources specialists with adult learners to foster an understanding of Indiana’s plants, water, soils and wildlife, and to promote volunteer service in local communities.

"We'll be showcasing the park's best features and digging into the unique history and natural resources of the area," said Mounds State Park naturalist Jessica Rosier. "Everyone from bat experts to bird aficionados will be teaching the students."

The class runs from 6 to 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday evenings from July 29 through Sept. 9. The course is sponsored by the Friends of Mounds State Park group, Mounds State Park, and Purdue Extensions in Madison and Delaware counties.

Phil Hallenbeck, president of the Friends of Mounds State Park, said he hopes graduates will use their newly acquired skills as volunteers for the park and the Friends group.

Class size is limited to 30 students. The fee for the class is $75. Registration is due by July 8.

To obtain a registration form or to learn more about the program, contact Jody Heaston, State Parks and Reservoirs Volunteer Coordinator, at jheaston@dnr.in.gov; or call or visit the Mounds State Park Nature Center at 649-8128.

The standard park entrance fee will be waived for students during class times.
