Annie, Jr. on stage tonight

Youth present musical at Commons Theatre

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. — Tonight’s the night as the kids of the Commons Theatre first-ever Youth Theatre Camp take the stage to present the musical, “Annie, Jr.”

“We are so excited,” said Sandra Jensen, camp organizer. “Things are going great.”

This weekend’s performances are the culmination of two months’ worth of the theatre camp’s activities for 17 kids, aged 6 to 16.

“I think they learned a lot,” said Jensen. “They’ve helped with props, costumes, sets, float building, singing, dancing, choreography… and they’ve had fun, too.”

Jensen noted that the co-directors of the camp, Laura Hicks and Kata Ewigleben, have been key to the success of the camp and the production.

“They have been absolutely fabulous. They were dynamite,” said Jensen.

Jensen said that both performances were already close to sold out mid-week, with lots of support in the community and promotional appearances from the Commons Youth Theatre troupe. The kids and their mentors built a float and delivered a taste of “Annie, Jr.” for the 4-H parade. Some of the actors also performed at the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce breakfast.

Jensen said that word of the camp has spread, so there’s plenty of momentum to bring the camp back next summer.

“There’s been a lot of excitement,” said Jensen. “We’re calling it a huge success.”

“Annie, Jr.” runs tonight at 7 p.m., and Saturday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at The Commons Theatre, 204 W. Church Street in Alexandria. Adult tickets are $8. Tickets for students 12 and under are $6, available through the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce or cast members.
