Summer fun for kids

Area day camps moving into full swing

ANDERSON, Ind. — School's out, and parents and children searching for things to do this summer will find a variety of options available throughout Madison County.

At the Alexandria Community Community Center, 315 S. Harrison St., for example, summer programming begins today with the annual cheerleading camp for kids from kindergarten through sixth grade, said Diane Woodsides, executive director.

She said the program has been popular for many years and is taught by four cheerleaders from the Alexandria-Monroe High School.

"I've been here 23 years and it was going on before that," Woodsides said. Kids will learn cheers, stunts, jumps and tumbling during the hour-long program.

On Wednesday, an interpretive naturalist from Mounds State Park will bring snakes, turtles and other reptiles to the community center for an up-close look at some crawling, slow-moving and slithering creatures that are native to Indiana, she said.

Later in June there will be Spanish instruction, more animal programs, an opportunity to create robots from recycled material such as wire, springs, nuts, bolts and washers.

A new program this year is "Cupcakes 101," where Celisa Rambo, the librarian at Alexandria-Monroe High School, will teach kids how to make "cupcakes in disguise." Two sessions are scheduled, one in June and another in July. The program is limited to 12 kids, however, so advanced registration is required, Woodsides said.

There are small fees for all of these programs, but some financial assistance is available, she added.

Summer programs began at the Anderson YMCA last week, but there are still many weeks of fun ahead, said Kim Contos, senior director of Youth Development.

The theme this week, for example, is "Race the Week Away," in which kids will learn different ways to have fun racing each other. The week will conclude with a trip to the Muncie Children's Museum.
