MARKLEVILLE — It’s all about community. The Markleville Farmers Market is a tight-knit community of vendors and neighbors with a strong focus on healthy living and a commitment to the concept of local.
“We need to know what we’re eating,” said Cindy Keaton, market coordinator, who stresses that Markleville’s farmers market vendors are local and known. “At our market, you’re able to talk to the hands that grew it.” The market got its start seven years ago, initially as a church ministry.
At last Saturday’s market, the chemical-free produce stand of Nerka Faith Farm in Anderson was vibrant and luscious with zucchini, green beans, cucumbers, squash, peppers and plenty more.
“We’ve had the perfect conditions this year,” noted Karen Hersberger.
Nearby, Judy Parks was offering baked goods including fruit crisps. Her Snickerdoodles and peanut butter cookies quickly sold out.
There was an entirely different selection of baked goods from Grammy’s Berry Patch Bakery out of Middletown, which features fresh breads, muffins and pretzels.
Handmade crafts also reflected the creative spirit of the Markleville community. Denise Myers was selling her unique, sparkly bracelets – a design that incorporates a cross and tells a story of love and gratitude.
“It’s because she’s that kind of person,” said Teresa Lanane, a friend enjoying the Saturday morning with Myers.
Linda Kirk’s solar lights give new life to various pieces of clear and colorful glassware. Kirk said they’re great for the picnic table, providing a nice warm glow.
“They’re beautiful at night,” said Kirk.
Mary Goodwin Powell of Middletown is another vendor at the market offering herbal salves and more.
“The best thing about going to the farmers market besides the fresh home-grown and unique handmade items is the knowledge,” said Powell. “Here you have a group of women and men with years of experience in rural living off the land. Not only are they a support group for each other, but they are more than willing to share information, recipes, how to grow and use market fresh produce and how to live local and healthier.”
