ANDERSON — Grab a lawn chair or a blanket and head to Mounds State Park on Saturday for live music from Johnny Nevada and the Rockets. The concert runs from 7 to 9 p.m. on the visitors center lawn.
"The idea is that folks can come to the park and be enjoying the sounds of Johnny Nevada and the Rockets while also taking in the beautiful surrounding environment of Mounds State Park," said Jessica Rosier, interpretive naturalist at the park.
The band plays a variety of family-friendly music ranging from rock to blues to country. Listeners can expect to hear songs from performers like Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Patsy Cline, even a little T-Bone Walker and Jimi Hendrix.
"This is a band that has played at a lot of state parks," said Rosier. "They've been very well-received, so we decided to bring them to Mounds State Park so that folks from Anderson as well as campers could enjoy them."
Johnny Nevada and the Rockets have been playing family-oriented venues around central Indiana for about five years. Johnny Nevada is the main vocalist and lead guitarist. Sally McCoy is a bass player and vocalist with the group. Jonathan Evert plays drums.
“We play songs that people know and love and enjoy listening to,” said band member McCoy. “It’s always fun to get out to the state parks and perform. I know it’ll be a good time.”
Go ahead and bring the kids. In addition to the tunes, the park will have hands-on activities for them like touch tables where they can check out the furs of various animals. There's also likely to be a visit from a park critter.
Friends of Mounds State Park will be selling refreshments and desserts.
The concert is free after the standard park admission fee of $5 per in-state vehicle or $7 per out-of-state vehicle. For more information, contact the park at 649-8128.
