No pulling back

Indiana author signs new book at Pendleton library tomorrow

PENDLETON – Try looking at the world through the eyes of a dog. This wouldn’t be just any dog, either. This is Daemon, a champion fighter dog in the Roman amphitheatre back in the first century A.D.

This is the perspective that Indiana author Ruth Ann Hanley took in writing her new book, “No Pulling Back.” The author will visit Pendleton Community Public Library tomorrow at 10 a.m. to talk about the book and sign copies. “No Pulling Back” is a full-length work of fiction appropriate for those ages 13 through adult.

“No Pulling Back” tells the story of Daemon, a favorite of the screaming, clapping, blood-thirsty crowd in the amphitheater of ancient times. After ultimately turning on his handlers, the champion killer-dog escapes his own execution and manages to live free. He discovers humans with a whole different attitude than the amphitheatre crowd. Among those humans is Jesus.

Author Hanley is an animal lover, writer and retired attorney. She lives in Indianapolis with her T.D.I. therapy dog, Pepper. Hanley is bringing Pepper along for her Pendleton visit tomorrow.

“She thinks that’s just great,” noted Hanley. The author said that there will also be a drawing for a shirt sporting a picture of Daemon, the main character in her book.

Hanley said that one of her inspirations for writing the book through the dog’s eyes came after learning more about how animals perceive the world. Temple Grandin, with her expertise on both animals and autism, was one of those who provided Hanley inspiration. The author’s visit to the Holy Land also helped to inform her writing.

Hanley’s visit to the library takes place at 10 a.m. tomorrow. The event is free. The library is located at 595 East Water Street in Pendleton. RSVP’s to the program are appreciated. Call the library at 778-7527 or email ashannon@pendleton.lib.in.us to reserve a spot.
