Lawmakers seek review of inspector general office

INDIANAPOLIS — Top Statehouse Democrats want a review of the Indiana inspector general's office amid questions about the ethics code applied to executive branch officials.

Sen. Tim Lanane of Anderson and Rep. Scott Pelath sent a letter to Inspector General David Thomas on Thursday seeking a "fundamental review" of the office's duties. They cited numerous concerns, including changes to the school grading formula to benefit a top Republican donor's charter school under former schools chief Tony Bennett.

The Associated Press last week published emails showing Bennett's staff changed the formula to raise Christel House Academy's score to an A. Bennett resigned as Florida's education commissioner and asked the inspector general to review the case.

Pelath and Lanane questioned the office's role in absolving Bennett.

Thomas didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.
