Ken de la Bastide: Basey to join Sheriff's race as Libertarian

There will be a third candidate vying in the November election to become the next Madison County Sheriff.

Tim Basey, a member of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, has filed the required documents with the Madison County Clerk’s office to run as a Libertarian.

Basey joins Republican Bruce Dunham and Democrat Scott Mellinger as declared candidates to replace incumbent Democrat Ron Richardson, who is prohibited by the Indiana Constitution from seeking a third term.

The question already being asked in political circles is, will Basey’s candidacy impact the race between Dunham and Mellinger?

No Libertarian or independent candidate has ever been elected to office in Madison County, so Basey is fighting an uphill battle in November.

"It has been at the back of my mind for 20 years," Basey said of running for sheriff. "I decided to run as a Libertarian because of the problems in the two parties, all the bickering that takes place.

"People are tired of politics in general," he said of hoping to attract voters. "Maybe a third party will shake things up a little bit."

Also this past week, Sam Hanna has endorsed Mellinger to be the next sheriff.

Hanna lost in the Republican Party primary to Dunham, and on election night indicated he would be working for Mellinger.

In the past Hanna has run for the sheriff’s office as both a Republican and Democrat without success.

Hanna said in making the endorsement that Mellinger previously served two terms as Madison County Sheriff, led the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and was a major with the Monroe — actually Marion — County Sheriff’s Department.

“I have no doubt that while he was a great sheriff and leader in the county his first eight years, Scott will be better prepared and qualified this election,” Hanna said.
