Lapel cancels special meeting

LAPEL, Ind. —

The Lapel Town Council canceled its special meeting set for Thursday to discuss an annexation proposal.

The purpose of the meeting was to decide whether the council would have a first reading on an annexation ordinance at its April 3 regular meeting.

The proposed area for the annexation stretches from Lapel's current boundary south to County Road 700 South. It also runs east to west from County Road 750 West to the Madison County line.

Council President Gary Shuck said the lack of signatures from homeowners in the proposed annexation area is the reason the council decided to cancel the meeting.

Without the signatures necessary for a voluntary annexation, the council did not want to make a decision, he said.

Earlier this week Shuck said the council would look at a non-voluntary annexation only as a last resort.
