Colts Report Card: Week 5

COLTS 34, SEAHAWKS 28

Player of the Game

T.Y. Hilton, WR, Colts

The second-year star incredibly tied Dallas Clark with his seventh career 100-yard game in just his 20th appearance in an Indianapolis uniform. Hilton's 73-yard score breathed life into a moribund offense in the first quarter, and he finished with five catches for a career-high 140 yards. In one of the wildest games in recent memory, nobody came up bigger than the 5-foot-9 wide receiver.

GRADES

Offense: A-

Two straight three-and-outs raised early caution flags, but the Colts ultimately made the most of their opportunities. Discouting the drive following an interception on Seattle's final possession, Indianapolis had just nine possessions — two more than in Week 1 against Oakland. The Colts managed to score on five of those drives and amassed 317 yards of total offense.

Defense: C+

The Colts did just enough on this side of the ball to walk away with a win. Both Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch rushed for 102 yards, and Wilson also threw for 210 and a pair of scores. But Indianapolis forced turnovers at the end of each half, including Darius Butler's interception on Seattle's final offensive play. And Robert Mathis became the 30th player in NFL history to reach 100 career sacks.

Special teams: B-

On the one hand, a blocked punt resulted in a safety and helped put the Colts in a 12-0 hole early in the first quarter. On the other, Lawrence Guy blocked a Seahawks field goal attempt, and safety Delano Howell returned it 61 yards to end zone for Indianapolis' first lead. Kickoff returns were uneven, but Pat McAfee had a solid punting day when he got the ball up. Add it all up, and the good outweighed the bad.

  • SPT - HB0726 - Mathis - Colts Camp day two 101 Mathis getting lighter workload as Colts get creative

Robert Mathis is caught in an interesting predicament. The veteran outside linebacker finds himself preparing as hard as he can to play a football season that he will watch for the first month on television. That's the result of a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy, and it means fans will see less of the league's reigning sack champion on the practice field.

The former second-round pick was running out of chances when the Indianapolis Colts signed him during the 2012 season. Eleven starts and eight interceptions later, he’s ingrained as the team’s slot cornerback — working under the final season of a two-year, $4 million deal.
