Colts waive suspended WR Brazill

ANDERSON — The Indianapolis Colts announced Friday they have waived wide receiver LaVon Brazill. The news comes just a little more than one week after the 2012 sixth-round draft pick was suspended for a second time for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

On July 3, the league announced Brazill would be suspended for a full year for his third violation of the policy. The former Ohio University star also was suspended for four games at the start of the 2013 season.

Under the terms of the league's collective bargaining agreement, there is no suspension for a player's first offense of the substance-abuse policy.

Brazill had 23 receptions for 347 yards and three touchdowns in 25 regular season games for Indianapolis.

His biggest moments came with a 42-yard touchdown catch during a frantic fourth-quarter comeback at Detroit in 2012, and a three-reception, 53-yard performance that included two touchdowns last year in a loss at Cincinnati.

Brazill had seven catches for 144 yards in three playoff games. He had two receptions for 73 yards and both of his career postseason touchdowns during the AFC divisional playoff loss at New England in January.

Even without Brazill in the mix, wide receiver figures to be one of the most tightly contested positions during the Colts' three-week training camp at Anderson University.

Reggie Wayne is returning for his 14th season after missing the final nine weeks last year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, and T.Y. Hilton is a rising star who set franchise postseason records with 13 catches and 244 yards against Kansas City in an AFC Wild Card game.

Indianapolis also added Hakeem Nicks as a free agent from the New York Giants and Donte Moncrief as a third-round pick out of Ole Miss. Returning receivers Da'Rick Rogers and Griff Whalen also will vie for roster spots as the team must determine whether to keep five or six wide receivers on the final 53-man roster.

The Colts announced the signing of undrafted free agent Aaron Burks to fill Brazill's roster spot.

Burks caught 47 passes for 743 yards and four touchdowns at Boise State. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound wide receiver was signed by Tampa Bay on May 12 and released June 13.

Indianapolis reports to training camp at AU on July 23.
