Irsay returns as Colts finally take part in NFL draft

INDIANAPOLIS — Jim Irsay returned to the Indianapolis Colts for Friday night's NFL draft, and general manager Ryan Grigson made no attempt to hide his joy.

The owner was shown working in the team's war room during a live shot on NFL Network, and a wide smile broke across Grigson's face when he was asked about Irsay's input.

"He knows how to push my buttons in terms of when we're making a pick to see if I'm really feeling it," Grigson said. "He looks you in the eye and wants to know about the player. He wants to feel the passion when you're making that pick and know you really want that guy."

Grigson really wanted both guys the Colts drafted Friday, despite waiting until the 59th overall pick to make his first selection. Indianapolis nabbed Ohio State offensive lineman Jack Mewhort with that second-round choice and added Mississippi wide receiver Donte Moncrief at No. 90 overall in Round 3.

Mewhort played left guard and left tackle for the Buckeyes, starting his final 38 games. That versatility was attractive to the Colts, who targeted the 6-foot-6, 309-pounder after watching him work out during practice leading up to the annual Senior Bowl.

"We'll find him a spot to start and let him go to work," Indianapolis head coach Chuck Pagano said. "It will figure itself out. He's a dang good player. He's big. He's smart. He loves football. He fits our environment. What I love, he's got nasty. He's tough. You have to have that on the offensive line."

Moncrief passed up his final season of eligibility at Ole Miss after leading the Rebels in receiving yards in each of the past two seasons. He caught 66 passes for 979 yards as a sophomore in 2012 and added 59 catches for 938 yards as a junior last year.

McAfee was focused only on the 27-26 loss against the New York Giants and how his right foot could have changed it.
