Kimmel ready for Winchester repeat

Veteran has 10 ARCA titles

If there was an Indiana Motorsports Hall of Fame, one of the first people to be inducted would be Clarksville resident Frank Kimmel.

Kimmel ran his first full season with ARCA in 1992 and since that time has won ten championships, the most for any national touring series in America.

This weekend Kimmel will be looking to defend his win in the 2013 Herr’s Chase the Taste 200.

Kimmel won the 2013 race when leader Mason Mingus crashed. It was his eighth win at Winchester Speedway.

“It is fast,” Kimmel said of Winchester. “Since they paved the track it has gotten so much better. They have also improved the sight lines.

“It’s a hell of a race track,” he said. “I always liked it. Salem is my home track and it’s a sister track to Winchester, but much rougher.”

Kimmel said staying out of trouble at Winchester is more difficult than at other tracks because of the high speeds and the banking.

Currently Kimmel is third in the point standings trailing Grant Enfinger who has four wins on the year. Kimmel is still looking for his first victory of 2014.

“Winchester is the great equalizer,” he said. “We need to get our short track car a little better. Grant (Enfinger) was fast at Salem, so he will be a contender this weekend.”

When he’s not racing an ARCA stock car, Kimmel can be found on off weekends racing a late model at the Sportsdrome in New Albany.

Kimmel started racing at the age of 15 in a street stock, moving to late models in 1984, getting his first ARCA start in 1990.

“So many people would pay to do it,” he said of his racing career. “I’m fortunate to drive a race car for a living. I’m still competitive and have the opportunity to win every time we’re at a race track.”
