Last-lap pass gives Jones win in Winchester

First career ARCA start for Georgia driver

WINCHESTER – Brandon Jones only led a portion of the final lap, but it was the last few yards to capture the Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 for the ARCA Series at Winchester Speedway on Sunday.

Jones made a last-lap run on leader Mason Mitchell and was able to get inside entering the fourth corner. The two traded paint with both cars getting loose coming onto the front straight with Jones emerging the winner.

It was the Georgia driver’s first ARCA start and he kept Mitchell from scoring his first victory.

“The last lap is the one that counts,” Jones said. “We had a pretty good car all day. The crew did a great job on the last pit stop.”

Jones came onto pit road and emerged in second.

Boston finished third followed by Schrader and Grant Enfinger.

Jones started on the outside of the front row and ran inside the top five for the entire distance, taking the lead on Lap 58 from Mitchell with an inside pass on the front straight. He led until Lap 79 when Mitchell returned the favor.

A late race caution with 16 laps remaining set up the final run for the checkers and probably cost pole sitter Ken Schrader the victory.

Schrader took the lead from Mitchell on Lap 140 with an inside pass entering Turn 1 and pulled away from the field, opening a comfortable lead over Mitchell and Justin Boston.

That all changed when Karl Weber made contact with the Turn 3 outside retaining wall and Mitchell, Jones and Boston all beat Schrader off pit road. The final caution flag waved when Frank Kimmel made contact with the front straight wall setting up a five-lap run to the checkers.

Schrader’s car was set up for long green flag runs and it appeared the strategy was going to work to perfection. The race was slowed on the first lap when Anderson Bowen and Kyle Weatherman got together in the fourth corner.
