Ken de la Bastide: Power on IndyCar hot streak

Outlaws at Anderson Speedway

In most forms of racing it is difficult to win three races in a row or four of six events, but that is the accomplishment of Will Power in the Verizon IndyCar series.

Power, driving for Team Penske, won the final two races of the 2013 season in Houston and California and opened this year with a win at St. Petersburg.

With his second win on the Florida street course, Power became only the second driver with more than one win at St. Petersburg. The other is Penske Racing teammate Helio Castroneves with three.

He will be looking to make it four consecutive wins on April 13 when the series travels to Long Beach for another street course event.

The last driver to win four races in a row was Sebastian Bourdais in 2006 with the former Champ Car series.

In the battle of the three super teams in IndyCar, Team Penske took the early lead with Power and Castroneves finishing in the top three, but team newcomer Juan Pablo Montoya struggled to finish 15th.

Target/Ganassi driver Scott Dixon finished fourth with teammate Tony Kanaan coming home in sixth and Ryan Briscoe finishing 10th. Charlie Kimball ended up 20th.

It was a tough day for the Andretti Autosport team, which was led by Ryan Hunter-Reay’s second-place run. Rookie Carlos Munoz finished 17th, James Hinchcliffe came home in 19th and Marco Andretti finished 22nd and last.

In other racing news: Defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson is probably feeling a little snake-bit after the races in California and Martinsville.

Johnson led the most laps in both races but failed to record his first win of the season.

At California, Johnson was leading with six laps remaining when he suffered a flat tire on his Lowe’s Chevrolet. Kyle Busch went on to record the victory.
