Two-time Anderson 400 champ dies in apparent suicide

Trickle excelled at Anderson Speedway

ANDERSON, Ind. —  Retired race car driver Richard “Dick” Trickle, who famously compared racing on the high-banked, quarter-mile Anderson Speedway track to “flying a jet fighter in a gymnasium,” died Thursday of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, Lincoln County, N.C., officials said.

According to media reports, the Lincoln County 911 center received a call about noon from a man at Forest Lawn Cemetery who said “there will be a dead body, and it will be mine.” When emergency responders arrived, they found Trickle’s body near his pickup truck.

Trickle raced late-model stock cars at Anderson Speedway and won the 1987 and 1988 Anderson 400 races. He went on to win NASCAR’s Winston Cup rookie-of-the-year award in 1989 and finished third five times in Winston Cup races.

Rick Dawson, the owner of Anderson Speedway, met Trickle when Dawson worked for the American Speed Association and Trickle was racing on the ASA circuit.

“Dick was one who would race every night if he could find a place,” Dawson recalled. “He was never at a loss for words and he was a lot of fun, but he was a hard racer.”

Dawson said he last saw Trickle, who had lived in Lincoln County since the early 1990s, about 15 years ago.
