Verna Davis: Clouds shouldn't cover up our vision

If the weather predictors are correct (and, gee, aren’t they always?) we are in for some cloudy days.

One guy on one channel says it’s going to be cloudy all day today. Another guy on another channel says it will be only partly cloudy tomorrow. Still another guy predicts five cloudy days in a row. Bottom line: it’s gonna be cloudy, folks.

Clouds can have a pretty strange effect on us. They make us sleepy, lazy, and sometimes outright depressed.

If it’s cloudy for too long, some of us might even start to get grouchy about it. The rest of us might just want to go straight back to bed.

In the Bible, clouds are not depressing at all. God led the people of Israel through the desert with a cloud. Jesus returned to heaven after His resurrection in a cloud. Jesus said when He comes again, He will be coming in a cloud. We’re told in 1 Thessalonians that we will rise and meet Jesus in the clouds.

Then, there’s the time Jesus took Peter, James, and John to a mountain, and while they were there, Jesus was transformed right before their eyes. His clothes became dazzlingly whiter than white, and Elijah and Moses appeared with Jesus. Then “a cloud appeared and enveloped them” and they “were afraid as they entered the cloud” and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to Him.”

Are you getting the connection? It’s right there. In the Scriptures. As plain as day. The voice of God, the leading of God, the presence of God, the place we meet God. It’s in the clouds. God is in the clouds!

When things are going well, when we’re happy and content and feel safe and cozy, we don’t turn to God as often as we should. When things are sunny, we smile feel confident in our own abilities to do things on our own. But when the clouds come, things are different.

Or humming the song at odd times during the day. Or worse yet, when stopped at a traffic signal you find yourself belting it out only to realize that even with the windows rolled up, the person in the car beside you can hear your not-so-musical rendition.

  • Verna Davis: Asking and answering some rhetorical questions

A rhetorical question implies its own answer so in order to make a point. Sometimes, rhetorical questions are meant to engage us in...well…umm…some sort of rhetoric. Just for the fun of it, let’s ask (and answer) some rhetorical questions.

  • Davis, Verna mug Verna Davis: Peace is worth fighting for Some people say they know how to find peace. We should “simply” follow our hearts, search for meaning in our lives, and fulfill our dreams. Sad to say, those things may bring us a bit of satisfaction, but they certainly don’t bring us peace.
