---- — ANDERSON — The post of general director for the Church of God Ministries, based in Anderson, was turned over Wednesday to the Rev. Jim Lyon.

Lyon was chosen by the faith movement’s General Assembly to serve the role served by Ronald V. Duncan who is retiring after 11 years in the post.

Lyon has been pastor at the Madison Park Church of God.

Wednesday, Lyon thanked General Assembly delegates for giving him the role. He said the church’s role of focusing on people was like the face of Christ. “Can you imagine a church of which you can so very proud and humbled to be a part of?” he asked.

In handing over the torch, Duncan said he set five goals when taking the post in January 2002.

“Among the five was to hand off to my successor as few problems as possible,” Duncan said. “My successor will be receiving a financially sound organization. We have no external debt. The building is debt free and we have a few dollars in reserve.

“Not many, Jim,” Duncan said, looking toward Lyon who was at the assembly.

The change of leadership, which had been expected for months, capped the end of the movement’s Global Gathering 2013, a conference for members and congregations worldwide.

Duncan urged assembly members to work together in espousing the movement’s beliefs “to discover the beauty of holiness and unity and deliver that message in a 21st century context.”

He said new churches must be planted “at a rate that exceeds our past record.”

Lyon’s Madison Park Church of God is in the process of filing for bankruptcy after it could not sell property to help pay back a loan for construction of its building when it moved to its south side location from a Scatterfield Road site.
