MARION — The Search, a young adult ministry of Marion’s Allen Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church, will host a communitywide march and downtown rally on Sunday, July 20, to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the March on Marion for civil rights.
The march will leave Marion High School at 2:30 p.m. and proceed via Adams street to the Grant County Courthouse, a route similar to that of the original 1969 march. A community rally will begin at 3:30 p.m. on the courthouse steps, featuring musical presentations and contributions from local pastors and community leaders.
The theme of the rally will be unity: calling all sectors of the Marion community to come together and learn from one another.
“Marion is a city that is still very much wounded by and wrestling with the residue of racial disharmony borne of a precarious history,” said the Rev. Shonda Nicole Gladden, pastor of Allen Temple. “We want this march to be a call for every resident of Marion to participate in the ministry of healing.”
The March on Marion 2014 is open to anyone. For more information, email The Search at email@example.com.
