Local churches host 'Sing in the Sanctuary'

The Herald Bulletin

---- — MUNCIE — This summer, historic churches across eastern Indiana will again resonate with musical concerts during a project called “Sing in the Sanctuary.” Locally, the concert is scheduled 7 p.m. Thursday at Crossroads Church, 600 West and 700 South in Delaware County.

An intergenerational choir from the Muncie area will bring a program of music specifically chosen to highlight the acoustical and visual properties of participating churches, led by Dr. Andrew Crow. Participating singers are a mixture of Ball State University students, Muncie’s Masterworks Chorale, and members of area church choirs who have volunteered their time and talent.

Historically, churches have been built, in part, as a platform for music, specifically acoustic vocal music. Some of the participating churches continue in the tradition of acoustic vocal music, others have adopted different musical styles, and some no longer have a weekly congregation.

Those who attend can expect to hear a variety of choral music, learn a bit about the history of each church and its congregation, hear the organ demonstrated, and even participate in communal singing.
