ANDERSON, Ind. — Madison Park Church of God Senior Pastor Jim Lyon will leave the church June 30.

He posted a statement on the church’s website Tuesday, announcing he’d accepted a post with Church of God Ministries, which is also based in Anderson.

He said he would “pack my things, clean out my office, and allow God to write my next chapter.”

Lyon has been named general director-designate, essentially the Ministries’ chief staff officer, chosen by the Ministries Council and ratified for a term of five years by the General Assembly. He’ll coordinate the directors of five ministry groups, which facilitate its global missions and roughly 2,200 congregations around North America.

“He is a strong leader and a lover of the body of Christ,” Ministries said in a release. “He is a man with vision and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and faith in God’s church.”

According to spokeswoman Mary Baker-Boudissa, Church of God Ministries currently has a presence in 89 countries and wants to expand — one reason Lyon was chosen.

“He (Lyon) is missions-minded,” she said. “That’s really important — that we can help spread the word of God around the world.”

The new job is “not a professional advance or a vocational ‘step up,’” Lyon wrote, “It is an opportunity to do good, but it is also a towering challenge in an historic moment in the life of the larger Church of God. It will not be easy. I cannot imagine what I will do in my new role when I get there. But, I know the Lord is walking two steps ahead. Of me. And you.”

Lyon has pastored the Anderson church for 22 years. His congregation outgrew the former North Anderson Church of God, on Scatterfield Road, and built Madison Park near Interstate 69 several years ago. He has served on the board of directors for the Hopewell Center, Community Hospital Anderson, Community Health Network, United Way of Madison County, Madison County Ministerial Association and the India Gospel League-NA.
