Verna Davis: Seeking the grown-up version of an Easter basket

It's that time of year again. Time for soft furry stuffed rabbits, marshmallow chicks, chocolate bunnies, peanut butter eggs, little treats hidden in plastic eggs, jelly beans, dyeing eggs with dissolving food color pellets, and that always fun Easter egg hunt in the backyard. All of those treasures find their gathering place in a plastic grass filled basket with a big bow on top.

I'm still enough of a kid to like Easter baskets. I like to fill them and I like to receive them. (Hint, hint, honey!) But this year, I think I want a different kind of Easter basket. A grown-up Easter basket.

I want my Easter basket to be full of sweet things. "How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts, therefore I hate every wrong path," (Psalm 119:103-104). I want my voice, lifted in praise to my Risen Savior, to be a sweet, sweet sound in His ear.

I want my Easter basket to be full of good things, like friendship with God. "Those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard....They will be mine, says the Lord Almighty, in the day when I make up my treasured possession. You will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not." (Malachi 3:16-18).

I want my Easter basket to be full of encouragement. "For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 15:4-6).

Or humming the song at odd times during the day. Or worse yet, when stopped at a traffic signal you find yourself belting it out only to realize that even with the windows rolled up, the person in the car beside you can hear your not-so-musical rendition.

  • Verna Davis: Asking and answering some rhetorical questions

A rhetorical question implies its own answer so in order to make a point. Sometimes, rhetorical questions are meant to engage us in...well…umm…some sort of rhetoric. Just for the fun of it, let’s ask (and answer) some rhetorical questions.

  • Davis, Verna mug Verna Davis: Peace is worth fighting for Some people say they know how to find peace. We should “simply” follow our hearts, search for meaning in our lives, and fulfill our dreams. Sad to say, those things may bring us a bit of satisfaction, but they certainly don’t bring us peace.

  • Verna Davis: Seek peace by turning from evil and doing good There's something we all want: peace. World peace. Family peace. Personal peace. We yearn for peace, a feeling of freedom from commotion and antagonism, of harmony in our relationships, of lack of strife or dissension. What would we do to have peace in our lives?
